Netflix Phases Out Basic Plan
Streaming giant Netflix is set to discontinue its basic $11.99 subscription plan without advertisements in the US, potentially pushing many users towards its cheaper, ad-supported option. This move follows similar cancellations in the UK and Canada. Announced on Thursday, the change will also affect subscribers in France.
Transition to ad-supported plans
Current users of the basic plan will need to choose a new subscription. Netflix has already notified customers via email. Co-CEO Greg Peters highlighted the advantages of the $6.99 ad-supported plan during a recent video conference, noting it offers “two streams versus one, higher definition, downloads, all at a lower price.”
Subscriber growth amid changes
Despite the changes, Netflix reported adding 8 million subscribers in the second quarter, even with the discontinuation of shows like Bridgerton and The Roast of Tom Brady.
New subscription plans
While the $11.99 basic plan is being phased out, Netflix offers several alternatives:
- Standard with Ads: $6.99 per month, includes Full HD quality, streaming on 2 devices, and downloads on 2 devices.
- Standard Plan: $15.99 per month, includes Full HD quality, streaming and downloads on 2 devices, with an option to add one extra member for $7.99 per month.
- Premium Plan: $22.99 per month, includes 4K quality, streaming on 4 devices, downloads on 6 devices, and an option to add two extra members for $7.99 per month.
Netflix’s strategic shift aims to enhance user experience while potentially increasing its ad-supported subscriber base.
