Mother’s day: 5 movies to watch with your mom
1. Little Women
Directed by Greta Gerwig, Little Women is the adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name. It is a beautiful movie. Margaret March is an ideal motherly role model. She raises her four daughters on her own in the absence of their father who had volunteered and left for the Civil war. She guided her daughters in finding joy and her daughters aspired to make their mother proud and to reach her level of goodness.
The heartwarming, funny, relatable, and must-watch movie is currently available on Netflix.
2. 20th Century Women
This film by Mike Mills is a tribute to his mother and two older sisters who raised him. Dorothea Fields played by Annette Bening, is a resolute single mother in her 50s. She asks two young women Abbie and Julie to help her raise her adolescent son, Jamie Fields. The film is set up on the threshold that abated both punk music and hippie values.
It is a multigenerational story of women navigating life, relationships, and being a support system for each other.
3. Brave
We all love Disney and sometimes their movies are all we need to quench the child in us. And this mum-daughter duo is so relatable it will leave you happy and teary at the same time.
Just like any mum-daughter duo, Princess Merida and Queen Elinor have clashing views quite often. Merida doesn’t want to get married whereas her mother wants the opposite and so Merida goes to a witch to help her change her mother’s views but the plan backfires and then the duo embarks on a journey to discover their relationship and trust. The movie is available on Disney+ and YouTube.
4. Lady Bird
Lady Bird is a bildungsroman movie about a teenage girl Christine McPherson who calls herself “Lady Bird”. The central theme is the complex relationship between her and her mother, Marion. Both are equally flawed characters who deeply love each other but fail to express themselves in a conversation. It’s a movie about not giving up on people you love, it’s beautiful to watch when they finally have a conversation and understand each other. This movie will make you cry, give you hope, and have you reflect on your relationship with your mum. You can watch this movie on Amazon Prime Video.
5. Turning Red
Another Mother-Daughter genre and Disney’s masterpiece. Turning Red follows the story of a 13-year-old girl Meilin Lee, who could turn into a huge Red Panda. The relationship between Mei and Meilin is the heart of the movie but we also see characters like Mei’s mother. One can very clearly see how Mei is a very subtle reflection of her mother in terms of the trope of an overbearing mother.
The relationships between mums and daughters are always complicated. They love each other, they hurt each other but in the end they always bond, and love encompass all. This movie is so wholesome it fills your heart. Therefore is the perfect movie to end your movie marathon with. The movie is available on Disney+ and YouTube.
We hope you loved the recommendations. Now go and have a blast with your mum.
