The world takes notice when James Cameron releases a film. And with his most recent work, “Avatar The Way of Water,” nothing has changed. The 2009 science fiction blockbuster “Avatar” has a sequel, and it has only been in theaters since last Friday. Yet it has already made close to $500 million worldwide. The movie is anticipated to have extended legs, like any major Christmas release, which should enable it to sail through calm waters for at least a few more months. This is what happened with the final two James Cameron movies, ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ (i.e., before ‘The Way of Water’). Although their first weekend’s earnings were not particularly impressive, they proceeded to make respectable money week after week and finally topped the list of all-time global earners in their respective eras.
The characters of Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, respectively, are reprised. Additionally reprising their roles are Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald. Sigourney Weaver also makes a comeback, albeit in a new capacity. With this movie, the franchise welcomes Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement.
It has since been revealed that “The Way of Water” has helped The Walt Disney Studios in passing the $4 billion threshold. The House of Mouse passed the $3 billion threshold in November, largely because of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” In case you aren’t aware, Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the previous owner of the “Avatar” franchise.
