Inventing Anna on Netflix is the perfect program for everyone who enjoys fame, glamour, and schadenfreude aimed at the wealthy. The drama follows the story of Anna Delvey, née Sorokin, the “Soho grifter”. Her escapades were chronicled in the viral post Maybe She Had So Much Money She Just Lost Track of It.
Between 2013 and 2017, the phony heiress conned her way through New York society; before being found guilty of defrauding hotels, restaurants, banks, and a private aircraft operator out of more than $200,000 in fraud. The show follows Sorokin up to her guilty judgment. The ones who binge-watched it may be wondering what she’s doing to now. Here’s what we know about Anna Delvey’s life since her conviction.
Is Anna Delvey in prison?
Sorokin was found guilty on the show after a trial drew media attention due to her fashion choices and demands. They occasionally caused proceedings to be delayed. Sorokin was “admonished for throwing tantrums when she couldn’t get her stylist-curated outfits, and drew unflattering sketches of the lead prosecutor during testimony”, according to The Guardian.
On one count of attempted grand larceny, three charges of grand larceny, and four counts of theft of services, Sorokin was sentenced to four to twelve years in prison. She was held at the Albion Correctional Facility until February 20, 2021. Then, she was released on parole for good behavior.
After Anna was released, what happened to her?
The phony socialite had a few weeks of freedom after her release. On Instagram and Twitter, she resurfaced as @theannadelvey. She was photographed out and about in New York City at the time.
Sorokin was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) six weeks after her release for overstaying her visa. She said her visa overstay was “unintentional and largely out of my control” It was before the debut of Inventing Anna. Her deportation was overturned on appeal. But she remained in detention when a judge labeled her as a “continuous danger to the community,” on the basis of her news interviews and social media posts.
She’s presently in the Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, New York. She will be held until ICE decides whether she’ll be deported to Germany. Sorokin, along with other detainees, sued ICE in early March as part of an ACLU case, alleging that she contracted COVID-19 in early January 2022 after authorities ignored her written request for a booster shot.
In an interview with the Times, she said: “Having been to prison and having been through the criminal justice system, it just exposed me to a whole different kind of a person, and my problems before just seem ridiculous.”
What has Anna Delvey said about the crimes she committed?
Sorokin is perceptible in the media (and on the show) as generally indifferent toward her acts. However, she did say to the court during her sentence hearing, “I apologize for the mistakes I made”. Sorokin stated in an interview given the day after her sentencing, “The thing is, I’m not sorry. I’d be lying to you and to everyone else and to myself if I said I was sorry for anything. I regret the way I went about certain things.”
Anna Delvey expressed regret for her behavior in a recent New York Times interview. She says she felt defiant and was still processing everything when she made the initial comment.
“I feel sorry for the way my case is being perceived. And I feel sorry that I resorted to these actions that people think I’m glorifying now,” she said. “I feel sorry for the choices I’ve made. Definitely, I don’t feel like the world would be a better place if people were just trying to be more like me.”
She’s also later stated that she believes she’ll never be able to move on from her misdeeds. Of her ICE detention, she told Cosmopolitan, “I was given an opportunity to move on, but they took it all away from me. I feel like I’m being tried for the same thing over and over again.”
What are Anna’s thoughts on the show?
Since the release of Inventing Anna, Sorokin has given numerous interviews; as per New York Times, she sold her story’s rights to the show’s makers for $320,000. She also acted as a paid consultant on the series. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, she said for the series, “This will override reality. It’s weird to watch your own life owned by somebody else,” adding “It’s a good exercise in letting go.”
She also mentioned that several of her friends and connections were involved in the production of the performance. “It’s like lots of people in your life telling you what they think of you, all at the same time. Turns out, most of the time we don’t want to know what people really think of us.”
She recalls wondering after seeing the trailer, “Am I that insufferable?” after seeing the trailer she said, “I don’t feel like I could ever be friends with myself.”
What is Anna’s present work?
Despite her current detention, the notorious con artist is still hustling and spreading her story. According to Deadline, Sorokin has teamed up with Bunim/Murray Productions, the creator of Surviving R. Kelly, on a limited docuseries that will “explore the next chapter in her life.” It will pick up where Inventing Anna leaves off, following Anna’s ever-changing intentions daily while also providing insight into her mind.
“Anna’s story is very much alive and still unfolding as we speak. We’ve been developing this project with her for months now – and spent countless hours on the phone and video calls with her. She is a complicated and fascinating character, and we are looking forward to telling the next chapter of her ever-evolving tale,” said Mike Driscoll, Director of Development at Bunim/Murray Productions.
Anna Delvey also hinted at a project with Julia Fox in her interview with the New York Times. “We actually connected on Instagram when I was out, and we DM’d a bit, and then she jumped on my Clubhouse. We have a similar sense of humor. She was never judgmental, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since”. She added that she and Fox were “working on a little something together.”
