Isaac Aptaker, co-showrunner of How I Met Your Father, says he’d love to see Britney Spears return as her How I Met Your Mother role. Yesterday, January 18, 2022, the new spinoff of the classic sitcom debuted the first two episodes of its ten-episode season. So far, it’s still in its early stages and establishing its major characters. So it hasn’t had the opportunity to feature the celebrity appearances that were a staple of How I Met Your Mother. It featured Katy Perry, Enrique Iglesias, Joe Manganiello, and a slew of others. Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl made a quick appearance. But she will most likely be a recurring role rather than a cameo as the season unfolds.
Britney Spears made one of the most prominent cameos on How I Met Your Mother. Spears played Abby in episodes 13 and 17 of season 3’s “Ten Sessions” and “Everything Must Go,” respectively. Abby works as a receptionist at a dermatologist where Ted has been going regularly. It’s evident that she’s been staring at him and desperately trying to get him to notice her. She finally joins forces with Barney and pretends to be engaged to him to make Ted jealous.
Screen Rant asked Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker during the exclusive interview what famous cameos from the original series they would want to see in their new program. “Let’s call Britney back,” Aptaker added. Thereby, inviting Spears to “come on by”. He didn’t go any farther with the question, most likely to avoid ruining some of the next episodes’ cameos. Abby isn’t going to be in How I Met Your Father season 1 if he’s only now asking Britney to phone them. Britney Spears’ conservatorship has ended, so it’s unclear what decisions she’ll make now. However, if she wants to get back into acting, a cameo on How I Met Your Father would be an excellent way to do so.
It’s unclear how Britney Spears’ role would fit into the How I Met Your Father storyline. However, the show has already found a way to organically incorporate some callback allusions. Such as Marshall and Lily’s New York apartment address. If Britney Spears or any other past HIMYM appearances are cast, maybe they will find a way to make it as appealing to the old fans as possible while not detracting from the new characters.
