Matthew Perry, one of the stars of the hugely successful TV sitcom “Friends,” was discovered dead at his home on Saturday, according to LA Times. He was 54. According to law enforcement officials, first responders discovered Perry unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home and were unable to revive him.
The LA Times and TMZ, which broke the story first, both said that there was no evidence of “foul play,” citing unidentified sources.
Perry was best recognized for his role as the wise-cracking Chandler Bing on NBC’s “Friends,” which aired for ten seasons from 1994 to 2004.
Perry has struggled for years with opioid and alcohol addiction, attending rehabilitation clinics on many occasions.
Perry described going through detox 65 times in his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” which was published last year, and spending $9 million in attempts to get sober.
Perry had health issues in 2018 as a result of his drug use, including a burst colon that necessitated a seven-hour operation and the use of a colostomy bag for months.
Perry dedicated the book to “all of the sufferers out there,” and wrote in the prologue, “I should be dead.”
According to TMZ, no drugs were discovered at the location on Saturday. According to the report, Perry was discovered by his aide, who contacted 911.
Perry was born in Massachusetts to Canadian and American parents and spent his childhood in Canada before relocating to Los Angeles.
