Black Widow had the biggest domestic box office opening since the COVID-19 pandemic began. It grossed an estimated $215 million globally in its first weekend, according to Disney. Black Widow is Marvel’s third-highest domestic box office opening for an origin tale, after Black Panther and Captain Marvel.
The newest edition of the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuted in cinemas. It was also on the Disney Plus streaming service on Friday, with a $30 Premier Access charge for the latter. However, it appears that the cinema was the preferred viewing location for many fans. The film grossed $80 million domestically, $78 million internationally. Also, it made more than $60 million through Disney Plus Premier Access globally.
“Black Widow’s strong performance this weekend affirms our flexible distribution strategy of making franchise films available in theaters for a true cinematic experience and, as COVID-19 concerns continue globally, providing choice to consumers who prefer to watch at home on Disney Plus,” Kareem Daniel, Chairman of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, said in a statement.
In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) on an espionage-tinged mission to uncover a plot related to her history.
