Barbie makes history: First female director's film crosses $1 billion milestone globally

This Barbie Movie is adored by everyone! Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has surpassed the $1 billion mark globally in its third week of release. Greta Gerwig directed the film, which puts a new perspective on the classic picture of the doll.

Taking to Instagram, the makers announced the news with a special post, which they captioned, “Here’s to our incredible Barbies and Kens from all around the world for making our Barbie dreams come true. We’re excited to share that #BarbieTheMovie has hit $1 Billion at the Global Box Office.”

Barbie’s massive earnings make director Greta Gerwig the first single female filmmaker to have a billion-dollar film. Frozen (USD 1.3 billion) and Frozen 2 (USD 1.45 billion), both co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, as well as Captain Marvel (USD 1.1 billion), co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, were both co-directed by women.

The Barbie movie reached the $1 billion mark just 17 days after its debut, becoming the fastest Warner Bros. release to do so. Previously, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 held the record at 19 days.

Barbie surpasses the $1 billion mark

Following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water, it is only the second blockbuster this year and the sixth of the pandemic era to exceed the USD 1 billion mark.

Greta Gerwig directed the film, which stars Margot Robbie as the famed doll and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken. On July 21, it was released in theaters.

According to estimates, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Barbie Movie, earned USD 155 million in its first weekend, making it the largest premiere ever for a female-directed film. Barbie cost USD 145 million, not including a marketing effort that catapulted the film into the mainstream before it even hit theaters. The screenplay was co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, the Oscar-nominated directors of Lady Bird and Little Women.

Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer were both published on the same day. Both films gained widespread critical acclaim.
