Angelina Jolie leaves U.N. refugee agency after more than 20 years

Angelina Jolie, a well-known humanitarian and celebrated actress in Hollywood, has resigned from her role as a special envoy for the UNHCR. Jolie, who has visited numerous war-torn nations, is leaving the organization after working there for more than 20 years.

She abruptly “moved on” from her position on Friday, it was revealed in a joint statement, in order to “engage on a broader set of humanitarian and human rights issues.”

“I will continue to do everything in my power in the years to come to support refugees and other displaced people.” According to AP, Angelina Jolie was quoted in the joint statement as saying that she believed it was time to “work differently” by interacting directly with refugees and neighborhood organizations.

Jolie joined the UNHCR in 2001 and was appointed as a special envoy in 2012.

Angelina has visited numerous war-torn nations with disputed borders throughout the years. She visited Yemen and Ukraine this year, where she spoke with refugees.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi expressed his appreciation for Angelina’s work in the following words: “After a long and successful time with UNHCR. I appreciate her desire to shift her engagement and support her decision.” Grandi said. “I know the refugee cause will remain close to her heart. And I am certain she will bring the same passion and attention to a wider humanitarian portfolio.”
