The presentation of the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor, marked the conclusion of the 76th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday in the South of France. Ruben stlund gave Justine Triet the same award for Anatomy of a Fall. This thought-provoking legal drama examines the guilt or innocence of a well-known novelist, Sandra Hüller, who is accused of killing her husband, about a year after winning his second Palme d’Or for Triangle of Sadness.
Triet is the third female winner of the Palme d’Or, following Jane Campion and Julia Ducournau. Jane Fonda delivered the award this year. Triet made a point of acknowledging the protests against the French pension reform that were forbidden from taking place during the festival when accepting the medal. She slammed President Emmanuel Macron’s government over its “shocking” suppression of pension protests, she said, “The country suffered from historic protests over the reform of the pension system. These protests were denied… repressed in a shocking way.”
