The Television Academy and Fox acknowledged today what many had predicted for some time: the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards would be held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January 2024, rather than September 2023.
While the change from the previously set date of September 18 is still a bit of wishful thinking, as both the WGA and SAG unions are still on strike and seeking fair deals with the AMPTP, it does open up the schedule enough that the TV Academy and Fox would likely still have time for the standard amount of pre-production needed to put on the awards telecast if deals are reached over the next couple of months.
Unfortunately for the TV Academy, the decision effectively eliminates the Emmys’ power over the Golden Globes (January 7, 2024) and Critics Choice Awards (January 14, 2024), the two other major TV awards that typically air in January. If neither awards show changes its current scheduled dates, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will now have one of its nighttime events take place in person on the same Sunday as the Golden Globes, with that program then airing on FXX the same night that the Critics Choice Awards air live on The CW.
The positive of what has been viewed as an unavoidable, essential date adjustment is that holding the ceremony in January still allows the Emmys to keep their 2024 schedule intact, with official events often commencing in early March. Still, with written television production virtually completely locked down in the United States, the question of whether there will be enough series eligible to satisfy the four months of nightly events dedicated to campaigning for Emmy nominations remains.
Creative Arts Emmy Awards to kick off celebrations, Primetime Emmys set for live broadcast on Fox
The 75th Emmy Awards will also be executive produced by Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannie Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment, according to today’s announcement. A host has not yet been announced.
As of today, the 75th Emmy Awards will begin with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which will be held in the Peacock Theater at LA Live over two consecutive nights on Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7, 2024. An edited version of those awards will air on FXX on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST. Finally, on Monday, January 15, 2024, the 75th Primetime Emmys will be broadcast live on Fox coast-to-coast from the Peacock Theater at LA Live (8-11 p.m. EST/5-8 p.m. PST).
