Here’s why experts are strongly recommending influenza vaccination for all children

Influenza or flu season is here. As the symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza overlap, experts believe that a flu shot will help in protecting children against influenza and reduce panic.

What is Influenza or ‘flu’?

Influenza or flu for short is a contagious viral infection which affects our lungs and airways. It is one of the most common respiratory illnesses. Studies show that patients may need hospitalization if it progresses to pneumonia or severe lung infection. Additionally, in India alone, every year over 100,000 children under the age of 5 need hospitalization due to the flu.

Am I at risk for the disease?

According to research, children, the elderly, pregnant women, healthcare workers and people with immunosuppression or chronic illnesses are at risk. However, anyone can get flu due to its contagious nature.

How does the flu spread?

Like most respiratory disease-causing viruses, it spreads through droplets. Hence, being in the vicinity of infected people can increase the chance of you getting infected. Moreover, these droplets can spread over 6 feet and stay on surfaces for some time. Younger children usually flock together and can spread the disease.

How to safeguard against the flu?

Prevention of influenza is quite straightforward. There are antivirals and drugs to treat the flu but, prevention is always better than cure. Here are a few easy ways to ensure your children don’t get infected by the virus. Moreover, these are similar to the social distancing norms in place due to the pandemic.

  • Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. When water is not available, use hand sanitizer to clean your hands.
  • Wear masks when outside. Always cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing.
  • Social distancing is key! Make sure to reduce or avoid direct contact with infected individuals.
  • Take influenza vaccination every year without fail.

Why should kids take the flu shot?

Health authorities across the globe recommend annual flu vaccinations. These vaccinations are especially recommended for children between the ages of 5 months and 6 years. However, as the immunity against the virus reduces over time, the yearly flu shots can help combat the virus and boost your child’s immunity. Moreover, they’re completely safe.
