Green fungus in covid recovered patient

A new ‘green fungus’ has joined the ranks amidst the rise of black, white, and yellow fungus. The first-ever case of the new disease showed up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

What is Green Fungus? What are its symptoms?

Green fungus is a type of fungus that causes Aspergillosis, high fever, and nose bleed. Additionally, it can also cause extreme fatigue and drastic weight loss. According to the reports by the Press Trust of India (PTI) by Dr. Ravis Dosi, patient had the above-mentioned symptoms.

He was transferred to a hospital in Mumbai without delay. “We need more research on whether the nature of green fungus infection in people who have recovered from COVID-19 is different from other patients,” added Dr. Dosi.

“Possibly the first patient detected with Green fungus, in Indore and shifted to Mumbai by air ambulance for treatment. He recovered from COVID-19 recently but underwent a test on suspicion that he had contracted black fungus!” tweeted Anurag Dwary, a resident editor of the PTI.

The first case of the green fungus in India

As per reports, the 34-year old coronavirus survivor was diagnosed with the new fungus before he was shifted to Mumbai by air ambulance. “He had recovered from Covid-19, underwent a test on the suspicion that he had contracted the dreaded black fungus infection,” said Dr. Dosi, the head of the Department of Chest Diseases at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS).

However, he was found to have an aspergillosis infection in his lungs, sinuses, and blood. “The patient recovered. But then he started having nose bleeds and a high fever. He had also become very weak due to weight loss,” added the doctor. The patient has recovered from Covid-19 merely two months ago and had close to 100 percent Covid-19 infection in his lungs. Moreover, he had to stay in the ICU for close to 4 weeks. Doctors suspect that the prolonged ICU stay and weakened immune system caused the infection.
