Russia reported new COVID-19 cases with a new strain of coronavirus that may be more contagious than Delta one as per reports from the RIA. The new strain, AY.4.2, has the possibility to spread widely according to Khafizov, a senior researcher. This strain may drive the rate of covid positives higher and raise Russia’s growing number. Moreover, this new variant could eventually replace the Delta strain. However, it is very likely that this will be a slow process.

“The vaccines are effective enough against this version of the virus, which is not so different as to dramatically change the ability to bind to antibodies,” stated Kamil Khafizov. According to studies, the AY.4.2 subvariant maybe ten percent more infectious compared to the original delta.

Reports claim it to be more contagious

According to Russia’s statistics, over 49,389 people lost their lives in August as the Delta stain’s claim raises. The nation has reported over 7.5 million infections. This week, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a new proposal for a one-week-long shutdown of workplaces. The shutdown will begin in November. The move comes after Russia hits another daily record of 1,028 deaths and 34,073 new infections on Wednesday.

Prime minister Golikova reports the casualties to be among the unvaccinated population. Moscow, the nation’s epicenter for the covid-19 has higher restrictions. Additionally, schools in the capital are closed. Mayor Sobyanin describes the happenings as a ‘worst-case scenario” with hospitalization rising three times in a month. Following Moscow, Voronezh, a major Russian city is also hit with the rise in cases as the virus claimed over 227,389 people.
