Protest over alleged ties to Israel marks company’s 50th anniversary event

Vaniya Agrawal, a software engineer in Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division, has publicly resigned from the company after staging a protest during Microsoft’s 50th anniversary event in Redmond, Washington. Her demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to Microsoft’s alleged connections to Israel amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Disruption during high-profile panel featuring tech giants

Vaniya interrupted a panel discussion featuring Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, along with former CEOs Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Standing up during the session, she declared:

“Shame on you all. You’re all hypocrites. 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been murdered with Microsoft technology. How dare you. Shame on all of you for celebrating in their blood. Cut ties with Israel.”

Security quickly escorted Agrawal out of the venue as attendees reacted, with some reportedly booing. Clips of the incident have since circulated widely on social media.

Internal email explains resignation and motivations

Following the event, Agrawal sent a company-wide email identifying herself and formally announcing her resignation.

“Hi all, My name is Vaniya, and after 1.5 years as a software engineer at this company, I’ve decided to leave Microsoft. My last day is next Friday, April 11. You may have seen me stand up earlier today to call out Satya during his speech at the Microsoft 50th anniversary. Here’s why I decided to leave the company, and why I spoke up today.”

In her message, she elaborated on her opposition to the company’s alleged involvement in the Gaza conflict, citing her activism with the campaign group “No Azure for Apartheid,” which advocates for Microsoft to sever its ties with Israeli institutions. The group is known to have organized both internal and external protests during the anniversary celebrations.

Not an isolated protest

Vaniya Agrawal’s act of dissent was not the only disruption at the event. Just moments before her protest, another Microsoft AI division employee, Ibtihal Aboussad, interrupted a keynote by Mustafa Suleyman, the newly appointed CEO of Microsoft AI, shouting, “Mustafa, shame on you,” as she approached the stage.

These back-to-back protests have drawn significant attention, adding controversy to an event meant to celebrate Microsoft’s legacy and future.
