Following a week of uncertainty on the company’s future under new owner Elon Musk, Twitter will inform employees through email on Friday about whether they have been laid off. Twitter has temporarily closed its headquarters, and restricted staff access.
The social network business informed its employees via email that it would notify them of any personnel reductions by Friday at 9 a.m. Pacific time (12 p.m. EDT/1600 GMT).
“In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” said the email, seen by Reuters.
According to Twitter, all credential access will be suspended and its offices will be temporarily closed in order “to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data.
Staff who have been laid off will be notified to their personal email addresses
Twitter employees who are not affected by the layoffs will be informed via their company email accounts, according to the social media platform.
The memo stated that employees who have been let go will receive information on the following steps in their personal email.
The announcement of layoffs brings to an end a week of purges by Musk during which he sought significant cost reductions and imposed a combative new work ethic throughout the social media giant.
He had previously fired the CEO and the top financial and legal officials from the corporation, reorganizing the senior ranks. Over the course of the previous week, several executives left, including those in charge of the company’s marketing, advertising, and human resources departments.
“If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home,” Twitter said
The long-anticipated layoffs have cooled Twitter’s renownedly open corporate culture, which is admired by its staff.
Hundreds of people flocked to the company’s Slack channels to say farewell shortly after the email arrived in Twitter employees’ inboxes, two employees told Reuters. The sources claimed that Musk was invited to join the channel.
“If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home,” Twitter said in an email on Thursday.
