Facebook and Instagram users will soon be subjected to paid verifications on the platforms. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta on Sunday announced the new service through a Facebook post. They are rolling it out in New Zealand and Australia. As per the post, a monthly subscription will cost $11.99 and $14.99 for web and mobile users respectively. Both iOS and Android users can avail of the subscription.

Zuckerberg revealed, in addition to a blue badge, users will receive increased visibility and reach, “extra impersonation protection” and direct customer support access. However, the increased visibility will “depend on a subscriber’s existing audience size and the topic of their posts”. According to Meta’s blog post, it will be relying on government IDs to prove the identity of verified users hence avoiding embarrassment from accounts impersonating brands and people.
