LinkedIn co-founder predicts the end of traditional 9-5 jobs by 2034

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, has captured the internet’s attention with a bold prediction: by 2034, the typical 9-5 job will be a thing of the past. In a newly released video, Hoffman explains how he envisions artificial intelligence (AI) dramatically transforming today’s workforce and eliminating traditional job structures.

Gig economy is the future

Hoffman suggests that future workers may not be traditionally employed but will instead participate in the gig economy. This model involves working with various companies across multiple sectors on a contract basis. While this approach offers greater flexibility and more options, it also comes with less job security compared to conventional employment.

Entrepreneur and angel investor Neal Taparia shared Hoffman’s video, emphasizing Hoffman’s history of accurate predictions. In his post, Taparia highlighted Hoffman’s foresight regarding the rise of social media, the sharing economy, and AI back in 1997, well before the launch of ChatGPT.

Taparia noted, “The speed at which AI has grown is incredible and a bit unsettling. Within a few days of ChatGPT hitting the market, millions of jobs across the world became irrelevant, and several companies started training their employees to work with AI technologies.”

Taparia praised Hoffman’s track record, stating, “Hoffman’s past predictions are spooky: Predicted social networks would change the world (LinkedIn sold for $26B), saw the sharing economy coming (early Airbnb investor), called the AI revolution years before ChatGPT.” Taparia’s endorsement adds weight to Hoffman’s latest prediction, underscoring the rapid evolution of AI and its impact on employment.

Implications for the future workforce

Taparia also mentioned that in the future, freelancers could earn significantly more than permanent employees and that traditional resumes and CVs might become obsolete. This aligns with Hoffman’s insights, reflecting a broader trend towards changes in employment structures driven by technological advancements. Hoffman’s prediction of the demise of the 9-5 job by 2034 highlights the profound impact AI is expected to have on the workforce. As the gig economy grows and traditional job arrangements become less common, workers and companies alike will need to adapt to new employment models and the challenges they present.
