Your guide to the Harris vs. Trump debate: Schedule and rules

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump to debate for the first time: Key points

When and where?

The highly anticipated debate between U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will take place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00 PM local time (0100 GMT Wednesday) and will be aired live. The debate will last 90 minutes, and, due to COVID-19 safety concerns, there will be no audience present in the room. ABC anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the event.

Debate Format: Muted microphones?

In a notable change from previous debates, microphones will be muted when it’s not a candidate’s turn to speak. This decision comes after weeks of discussions between the two campaigns. Only the moderators will ask questions, and no topics or questions will be shared with the candidates ahead of time. This rule ensures that both candidates have an equal platform without interruptions.

Speaking turns and tebuttals

The candidates will not offer opening statements. Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to each question, followed by two minutes for the opponent’s rebuttal. An additional minute will be provided for follow-ups or clarifications. At the end of the debate, each will give a two-minute closing statement, with Trump going last, following a virtual coin toss.

No props, no interaction

The candidates will stand behind podiums throughout the debate. Props and pre-written notes are not allowed. They will only be given a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water. Additionally, campaign staff are prohibited from interacting with the candidates during commercial breaks.

This event marks the first direct debate between Harris and Trump, and both will be aiming to secure an advantage as the race for the White House tightens.
