#Castoroil: Dangerous Social Media Trend
A concerning TikTok trend involving castor oil has gained momentum, with over 60,000 posts tagged “#CastorOil.” Users claim it promotes hair growth, improves complexion, detoxifies the body, aids weight loss, and combats serious illnesses.
Health experts strongly advise against ingesting castor oil
However, health experts strongly advise against ingesting castor oil, derived from Ricinus communis seeds, warning it can cause “explosive diarrhea.” Jane Clarke, an incontinence nurse at ConfidenceClub, told Newsweek that the oil’s laxative properties can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.
Clarke emphasized there is no scientific basis for claims that castor oil cures serious illnesses like cancer or aids in weight loss. She explained that castor oil triggers prostaglandin receptors, causing rapid intestinal contractions that prevent proper digestion and fluid absorption, leading to severe diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Historical context and modern medicine
Historically used as a laxative and labor inducer, castor oil is now deemed unsafe for these purposes. Clarke noted, “Medicine has advanced, and we have safer alternatives today.” She recommended avoiding ingestion altogether and highlighted that external application is generally safe but won’t cure diseases.
Health professionals urge the public to steer clear of ingesting castor oil, despite its popularity on TikTok, due to significant health risks and lack of scientific support for its touted benefits.
