The new season of IPL is to start from 26th March 2022. The thrill, excitement, and enthusiasm are at their peak for the tournament to commence. Players are reaching their camps to start practicing before the first leg of the league starts. However, the two-month-long tournament is likely to see certain changes this year. This includes changes with regards to DRS, COVID-19 allowances for the teams, and the newly-introduced MCC laws.
“Unable to field a team on account of COVID-19 for any match due to having less than 12 players available in the playing XI (of which at least 7 must be Indian) plus 1 substitute fielder,” a BCCI communication according to Cricbuzz website read.
“The BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision of the IPL Technical Committee will be final and binding,” the communication added.
The former rule stated that the board, ‘will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the franchisee will be deemed to have lost the match with its opponent being awarded 2 points. There will be a total of 74 games in the 2019 edition, with clubs separated into two groups. Teams in the same group will play each other twice, while the rest of the field will only play once.
Two DRS allowed per innings
A team’s DRS reviews might be increased to two each inning. Each team has only been permitted one review so far. The number of DRS reviews a team could have per innings was increased to two. Each team has only been given one review so far.
According to new MCC cricket laws that will be enforced in international cricket on October 1, 2022, a new batsman will have to take strike even if the player who was removed had crossed over before the catch was taken. Another significant modification to the playing conditions is that if a Super Over cannot be completed in a playoff game or final, the club that finished first in the league stage will be proclaimed the winner.
What are 3 major changes to be implemented?
- BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season if a team cannot field a playing XI due to COVID-19. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee.
- Several unsuccessful DRS reviews allowed a team to increase to two per innings.
- If a Super Over in a playoff game or final cannot be completed, the team who finished highest in the league stage will be declared winners.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in the first game. The second game will see Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians. Surya Kumar Yadav is likely to miss the game owing to a hairline fracture.
