Historic Midnight Vote in Dixville Notch Kicks Off 2024 Presidential Election with Tie
In a symbolic start to the 2024 presidential election, the tiny northern New Hampshire hamlet of Dixville Notch maintained its historic tradition of midnight voting, delivering a split decision between the two major candidates. The results saw three votes each for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, reflecting the deeply divided national political landscape.
A solitary tradition
For the first time in recent memory, Dixville Notch stands alone in its midnight voting ritual. Its traditional midnight voting companions, Hart’s Location and Millsfield have opted for conventional daytime polling this year, marking a significant shift in this cherished New Hampshire custom.
“The entire process takes merely minutes from start to finish,” noted election officials as the six registered voters cast their ballots in the living room of the historic Tillotson House at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel.
Railway workers’ legacy
The midnight voting tradition’s origins trace back to practical necessities rather than mere ceremony. According to the Associated Press, the practice emerged as a solution for railway workers whose schedules prevented them from participating in regular daytime voting. Hart’s Location pioneered this approach in 1948, with Dixville Notch adopting the practice during the 1960 presidential election.
The Balsams connection
The tradition’s introduction to Dixville Notch is credited to Neil Tillotson, the town’s former moderator and owner of The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel. After learning about midnight voting from a journalist, Tillotson established the practice that would eventually become synonymous with the town’s identity.
Historical perspective
While Dixville Notch’s results often garner national attention, they don’t necessarily predict broader electoral outcomes. This was evidenced in the 2024 Republican primaries, where despite a unanimous vote for Nikki Haley among the town’s six voters, Donald Trump ultimately secured both the state’s primary and the Republican nomination.
The midnight vote in Dixville Notch continues to serve as a compelling reminder of America’s democratic traditions, even as participation in this unique custom dwindles among New Hampshire’s northern communities.
