Tech billionaire briefly steps out after security intervenes
Washington, D.C.: Elon Musk found himself in an unexpected standoff with security during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night after being informed that cellphones were not permitted inside the gallery. The billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO was later seen sitting on the steps outside the House Chamber but returned in time to hear Trump personally recognize his contributions to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
A prime seat, a phone, and a security intervention
Elon Musk, who had secured a high-profile seat in the gallery, was positioned alongside newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel, Trump’s sons Eric and Don Jr., and Eric’s wife, Lara. Wearing a dark blue tie and suit, he greeted other attendees with handshakes before taking his seat.
However, a reporter inside the chamber spotted Musk recording a video—a clear violation of gallery rules.
“A cop told him to put the phone away,” the reporter observed.
Shortly after, Musk stepped outside but later returned to his seat just in time for Trump’s remarks.
Trump’s acknowledgment and Elon Musk’s reaction
As Trump delivered his speech, he took a moment to recognize Musk directly.
“Thank you, Elon, you’re working really hard,” Trump said, before turning to the audience and adding, “He didn’t need this.”
Musk, smiling, responded with a salute as Republicans in the chamber erupted in applause.
Part of Trump’s motorcade amid a contentious night
Earlier in the evening, Elon Musk had arrived at the Capitol as part of Trump’s presidential motorcade from the White House. As the President and First Lady Melania Trump entered to a standing ovation, Democrats in the room responded with persistent heckling.
Trump’s address, titled “The Renewal of the American Dream,” focused on his America First agenda and outlined his plans for the upcoming term.
