Breezy Explainer: Why did Djokovic's world ranking fall from 3rd to 7th despite winning Wimbledon?

Novak Djokovic’s world ranking fell from third to the seventh spot despite him winning Wimbledon. This is Djokovic’s worst ranking in over four years. ATP decided to strip ranking points from Wimbledon in response to their decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a result, Djokovic lost 2,000 points, the most among men’s singles players.

A player’s performance in 19 championships over the previous 52 weeks is taken into account by the ATP rankings. Djokovic simply lacks the numbers over the last 52 weeks to maintain his Top 5 position after missing the Australian Open this year due to not receiving a COVID-19 vaccination. Before that Djokovic won Wimbledon in 2021 and then competed in the Tokyo Olympics, the Olympics are not counted while calculating the ATP rankings.

Each weekly list of rankings represents the total points awarded to players over the last 52 weeks. Following the conclusion of each tournament, players are awarded ranking points they win at the event.

Before a Grand Slam, the 32 highest-ranked players are given seeds hence guaranteeing they will not be playing each other for the first two matches. At some non-Slam events, higher-ranked players are awarded byes in the first round.

Grand Slam competitions for both men and women offer the champion 2000 ranking points. The men’s event’s runner-up earns 1200 points, while the women’s event’s runner-up earns 1300 points. The semifinalists get 720 and 780 points, respectively.

Top eight players who earn the most points in a calendar year also participate in the year-end ATP and WTA tour finals, which award points for each win and a total of 2000 ranking points for the title.

Novak Djokovic with 6,770 ranking points, has lost his top place to both Daniil Medvedev (7,995) and Alexander Zverev (7,030), now ranking third. Due to the Russian’s suspension and the German’s ongoing injury, both players missed Wimbledon.

Nick Kyrgios lost 90 points and slid five spots to 45th in the rankings. Another victim of the consequences of the ranking points is Cameron Norrie. He would have moved up to the ninth spot, however, he is at the 11th.position now.
