Breezy Explainer: Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard are going back to court. Here's why

After losing a defamation case, actor Johnny Depp filed for another defamation trial in Virginia that started on Monday. Actor Amber Heard and her ex-husband Johnny Depp are going back to court. Here’s why the actor is suing his ex-wife.

What are the defamation cases Johnny Depp is filing?

After losing a defamation case involving his ex-wife, the Hollywood actor is filing for another in Virginia. Johnny Depp is suing Heard for libel in the $50 million defamation case filed in March 2019. The lawsuit filed on Monday is over Heard’s article for The Washington Post, a year before. In the article, Heard spoke out about sexual violence and touched upon the lessons from the #MeToo movement. However, the actor did not name Depp or any personal details.

“Like many women, I had been harassed and sexually assaulted by the time I was of college age. But I kept quiet — I did not expect filing complaints to bring justice. And I didn’t see myself as a victim,” she stated. “Then two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out,” she added.

Additionally, Depp also launched a different legal action against Dan Wotton in London. Dan is the publisher and executive editor of The Sun, a British tabloid. Dan wrote an article titled “Gone Potty – How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife-beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?”. It was following JK Rowling’s support of Depp as the lead of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. However, Depp lost the case with the Judge concluding the article was ‘substantially true’. Moreover, Depp was stopped from reapplying.

What are the allegations against the actor?

Heard and Depp was married for 15 months before Heard took to filing for a divorce in 2016. The actor also claimed that Depp assaulted her.

Depp has denied all the accusations. Additionally, he mentioned that Heard left human feces on the bed of their LA home.

Describing another incident as a “three-day hostage situation,” when Depp was filming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” Heard stated that Depp choked and pushed her to the ground. She is claiming that it took place after she found MDMA pills.

Depp has denied all accusations and maintained that he has not hit her.

Following the defeat in London, Depp let go of this role in the Fantastic Beast franchise. “I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request. My life and career will not be defined by this moment,” wrote Depp.
