Kenya’s religious starvation cult has been making headlines. Many more dead bodies were discovered by the police since the initial tip-off about the cult led by Paul Mackenzie Nthenge. The founder was urging his followers to stave to death to find god. So far 90 bodies were discovered, including those of children. The matter has led to cries of anger and shock across Kenya and the world.
The police are combing through the Shakahola forest in search of victims. On Tuesday the police extracted 10 additional bodies from the mass graves. Among them, three were children. They also found two skeletal remains of survivors. However, officials believe the number to rise. Nthenge was arrested by the authorities and a probe of his Good News International Church is ongoing.

The authorities began the search based on a tip about shallow graves filled with dead bodies inside the forest. They started searching in the Shakohala forest located close to the coastal town of Malindi. Since then, dozens of bodies of people reportedly members of the Christian cult have been turning up. Nthenge, the cult leader told his followers to starve in order to go to heaven and meet God. He surrendered to the police following the ” “Shakahola Forest Massacre”.
Officials believe followers of the Good News International Church might still be hiding in the region and at risk of death. The Kenya Red Cross earlier stated 212 people were reported missing. Two of them have since been reunited with their families. “Each day that passes by there is a very high possibility that more are dying. The horror that we have seen over the last four days is traumatizing. Nothing prepares you for shallow mass graves of children,” stated Hussein Khalid. Khalid is the executive director of Haki Africa. The rights group is responsible for tipping off the police.
