Unexpected Encounter
Commuters in Warwick, Rhode Island, experienced a startling encounter with nature on Monday afternoon when a deer crashed through the windshield of a bus.
Footage released by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) captures the dramatic collision and its aftermath. The bus was traveling south on Warwick Avenue shortly after 3:10 p.m. when a deer suddenly darted into the busy street and leaped through the front windshield. A second camera angle shows passengers being showered with shattered glass as the stunned and injured deer rolled around on the floor.
Injuries and response
Six passengers were aboard the bus during the incident. Warwick police Capt. Charles Boisseau reported that two passengers were taken to the hospital for minor injuries from the broken glass, while a third passenger sought medical attention independently.
Unfortunately, the deer succumbed to injuries and was later removed by the state Department of Environmental Management.
RIPTA’s interim CEO, Christopher Durand, praised driver Leocadio Hernandez for his exemplary response to the unexpected situation, highlighting the driver’s calm and professional handling of the incident.
