Texas man ‘frees’ dogs from an animal shelter

A man was arrested in Texas for breaking into an animal shelter and freeing several of its 150 dogs. The Abilene Police Department revealed George Paul Jones, a 38-year old broke into the Abilene/Taylor County Animal Services building early on August 26 morning. He was able to access the facility through the roof by climbing the perimeter fence. Jones is accused of opening several cages on the building’s canine side that was housing over 150 dogs.

Officers revealed they found one dog dead and several others injured. They believe there was fighting among the animals. The animal shelter crew had to venture outside the property to find the dogs that went outside. However, as per the ALL KIND Animal Initiative, several dogs were unaccounted for as of Friday night. They later recovered the van that Jone is accused of stealing from the animal shelter. Detectives later brought him for questioning. He was subsequently arrested and charged with offenses for break-in, motor vehicle theft, and animal cruelty.

More on the animal shelter break-in

‘The horrific break-in and subsequent turmoil at Abilene Animal Services resulted in the tragic death of one dog, multiple dogs still unaccounted for, and has also left numerous dogs with injuries. We are extremely thankful for the Abilene Animal Services employees, the Abilene police department, and the All Kind volunteers that rallied to recapture and provide immediate care and assistance to the dogs as well as clean up and repair the destruction to the building,” stated the animal initiative.

“We are asking the animal-loving community to come together and donate to this medical fund that is being established to provide much-needed medical care to a number of the animals injured during today’s break-in. Your generous donations will go directly towards the urgent care of these animals and any leftover donations will be put towards future animal medical needs,” they added. As per the Animal Initiative, five of the dogs are still missing. They also posted a flyer on Facebook, urging people to help look for Allen, Brock, Gunner, Highlander, and Noria.
