A New Zealand woman has been sentenced to two months in prison after her severely obese dog, Nuggi, died. Nuggi, weighing 53 kg (118 lbs), was nearly immobile when found by police in 2021.
Disturbing discovery
Nuggi was discovered in the owner’s Auckland home, where several other dogs were also present. The dog was taken by the SPCA and placed under their care. Despite losing 8.8 kg (19.6 lbs) in two months, Nuggi succumbed to a liver hemorrhage.
The owner pleaded guilty to failing to provide for the dog’s needs, resulting in a sentence from the Manukau District Court in Auckland. She was fined $1,222 NZD ($720) and banned from owning dogs for a year.
Veterinarian findings
SPCA’s investigation revealed Nuggi’s extreme obesity prevented veterinarians from detecting his heartbeat. Nuggi also suffered from skin growths, enlarged claws, and conjunctivitis. The dog struggled to move and required multiple breaks to breathe while being transported.
Statement from SPCA Chief
Todd Westwood, SPCA Chief, condemned the owner’s actions, stating, “Nuggi was one of the most obese animals we’ve ever come across.” He emphasized the importance of a balanced diet and exercise for pets, criticizing the overfeeding that led to Nuggi’s condition.
The SPCA reported that Nuggi was fed approximately 10 pieces of chicken daily, along with dry food. This excessive feeding regime severely compromised Nuggi’s health.
Westwood concluded, “Part of being a responsible dog owner is providing your pet with an appropriate diet and daily exercise. Nuggi was being drastically overfed, and instead of seeking help, his owner continued to overfeed him until he could barely walk. This is unacceptable.”
