Kabosu the dog gained internet fame and also inspired Dogecoin. According to the owner, the dog is extremely ill and suffering from liver failure and leukemia.

Kabosu, the internet-famous Shiba Inu, who inspired the Dogecoin and Doge meme is sick. As per an Instagram post by Atsuko Sato, Kabosu, her 17- year old Shiba Inu, stopped eating and drinking on Christmas eve. As per the post, the dog is suffering from chronic lymphoma leukemia and acute cholangiohepatitis. Sato stated the dog was moving around slowly and very little. Sato’s earlier posts reveal the dog appeared to have jaundice and was in a dangerous condition.

The Shiba Inu gained popularity and went on to become one of the most recognizable animals in 2010. The fame was after a picture of Kabosu with a curious expression and her paws folded went viral on Reddit, 4Chan, and Tumblr. Soon, people started photoshopping her picture on landmarks and pastries among other things. The meme was also co-opted by Stockholm’s subway and Oreo.

However, Kabosu’s popularity skyrocketed in 2013 when two programmers incorporated the image on Dogecoin, an alternative cryptocurrency as a response to Bitcoin. Moreover, after receiving Elon Musk’s endorsement, the popularity reached new heights. With a value of $400 in 2014, it became the first “meme coin”. Dogecoin also sponsored the Watford Football Club with the dog’s face on the jersey. Recently, a pro-Ukrainian social media group known as the North Atlantic Fellas Organisation raised funds The defense ministry of Ukraine also tweeted thanks using a photoshopped image of Kabosu.
