Greek police arrested the man who kicked a cat into the sea. The man was dining at an outside restaurant in a viral video. The incident took place at an animal-friendly eatery.
The man eventually enticed two cats to the brink of the cliff with a fish as bait. He eventually kicked one of them into the water. The man also received applause for his unlawful deed, at least from his table.
This heinous deed did not go unnoticed. A member of a local animal rescue organization also raced to the scene to investigate. Fortunately, the cat was found unhurt after being taken to a veterinarian by locals.
According to reports, the restaurant owner stated that he took care of the cats and that they were fine.
The authorities were able to identify and arrest the man, thanks to the viral footage. If charged, he may face up to ten years in prison. According to reports, a penalty of £42,000 could also be imposed.
Violence against animals is unacceptable
Takis Theodorikakos, Greece’s Citizens Protection Minister, turned to social media to announce the man’s arrest. “The Greek Police arrested a person who kicked and threw a kitten into the sea. Violence against animals is unacceptable,” the minister wrote in a post.
He further added, “The government has passed a strict law to protect animals from abuse which is now in place, but in any case, it is a matter of humanity and culture. I am deeply saddened by those who mistreat animals and those who tolerate it. I heartily congratulate those who raised the issue. The reason now belongs to Greek justice.”
In Greece, animal abuse is a serious crime. In 2020, the country also approved a law making animal cruelty criminal by up to ten years in prison.
