Dog owners in the UK can face jail and up to $27,000 fines for putting pets on a vegetarian diet. Although the guidelines do not specifically mention vegan or vegetarian diets, their food intake must “meet all of your dog’s nutritional needs,” reports The Sun.
Lack of necessary nutrition can cause health problems in dogs. They could potentially have their pets taken away or be barred from ever owning animals again. Canines must be fed an “appropriate diet,” says the Animal Welfare Act of 2006. The failure to do so may result in prosecution.
According to the Blue Cross, dog owners in the United Kingdom have a legal obligation to cater to their dogs’ wellbeing. “In the UK, under the Animal Welfare Act the owner must feed the animal an appropriate diet,” Daniella Dos Santos says. “If your personal belief system means you don’t want to eat any animal protein, that’s fine. This diet is not to meet the welfare standards of your pet. “It is theoretically possible to feed a dog a vegetarian diet. It’s much easier to get it wrong than to get it right. You will have to do it under the supervision of a veterinary-trained nutritionist,” she says.
All domestic animals have the legal right to live in a reasonable environment. Eat a suitable diet. Exhibit normal behavior patterns. To keep them with or separately from other animals. To safeguard them from pain, suffering, damage, and sickness. Last year, when discussing the problem of canine nutritional requirements, the president of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) stated that owners are responsible for meeting their dogs’ food demands.
