California: Irvine police save pitbull puppy from fentanyl overdose using Narcan

In an attempt to save a pit bull puppy from a probable fentanyl overdose, the Irvine Police Department in California recently delivered Narcan, an overdose-reversing medicine. The incident occurred when the puppy was exposed to fentanyl in an automobile, resulting in overdose symptoms.

The Irvine Police Department disclosed its involvement in a case that shook the community on Friday (September 8). Caleb Aaron Gibson, 29, of San Juan Capistrano, and Katherine Marylou Menke, 27, of Santa Ana, were detained at a Walmart on suspicion of felony animal cruelty and drug possession, according to the Associated Press.

The circumstances surrounding the puppy’s overdose are yet unknown. It is thought that the exposure may have occurred within the confines of the vehicle. The severity of the situation was heightened by the fact that this was not the puppy’s first overdose.

One of the arrestees was said to have recognized the symptoms, saying, “Oh, I think my dog is overdosing.”

Narcan administration

Officers on the scene immediately provided Narcan to the sick animal. The police agency caught this important moment on camera, showing officers providing Narcan to the terrified puppy as it struggled to breathe. The Narcan worked as anticipated, and the puppy’s condition began to improve.
