Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo who was named the world’s oldest dog by the Guinness Book of World Records in February 2023, recently celebrated his 31st birthday. On Saturday, his owner Leonel Costa threw a huge traditional Portuguese feast at his home in the remote Portuguese community of Conqueiros, where he has lived his whole life. The celebration drew more than 100 guests.
According to reports, the guests were offered local meats and fish. Bobi, who exclusively consumes human food, was given a unique dish. At the party, a dancing team also performed, and Bobi took part in one of their dances.
Costa, who has already owned several elderly dogs, including Bobi’s mother Gira, said he never dreamed any of his dogs would live beyond their 30s.
“We see situations like this as a normal result of the life that they have, but Bobi is one of a kind,” Costa said.
The pet parent went on to say that the “calm, peaceful environment” he has at home is the most important aspect of Bobi’s longevity. The oldest dog has never been tied or leashed and has spent his entire life roaming the trees surrounding the estate, according to Costa.
Bobi is a beloved companion and symbol of memories
Bobi has never been lonely because he was raised among many animals. He’s “very sociable” and enjoys being around others. He finds it difficult to walk now that he is in his late years and prefers to stay at home. He has poor vision, which causes him to frequently collide with objects while walking.
Bobi, like most elderly individuals, sleeps a lot. After eating, he promptly goes to bed, though on chilly days, he prefers to slumber by the fire, according to his owner.
Bobi’s birth date has been validated by the Serviço Medico-Veterinário do Municpio de Leiria (Leiria Municipal Veterinary Medical Service), which registered Bobi in 1992. SIAC, a pet database sanctioned by the Portuguese government and operated by the SNMV (Sindicato Nacional dos Médicos Veterinários; National Union of Veterinarians), has also confirmed his age.
Costa, who is now 38, was just eight years old when Bobi was born. Bobi, he says, is a live reminder of the past for him. “He is special because looking at him is like remembering the people who were part of our family and unfortunately are no longer here, like my father, my brother, or my grandparents who have already left this world,” the owner said. “Bobi represents those generations.”
