Basic dining etiquette rules you need to know

Utensils

If the dining table is set properly, the rule is to start by using the utensils on the outside and work your way inward.

 Think "BMW"

Use “BMW” to remember where plates and glasses go. You will find your bread-and-butter plate to your left, then the meal in the middle, and your water glass to your right

Napkin

After you take your seat, lift your napkin, unfold it and place it on your lap. Never tuck it into your collar or your belt

Elbows

Just like our mothers taught us long time ago, our elbows do not belong on the dining table. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with placing your elbows on the table while having a conversation between meals.

Bread

Use the non-serrated butter knife to transfer a pat of butter to your bread plate. Use your hand to break a bite-sized piece of the bread, butter it using the butter knife, then eat it.

Passing

Always pass the food to the right. It’s either you hand the dish to the next diner, or you hold it until they take some food, before they pass it on.

Noises

Some people still chew with their mouths open. To me, this is a major faux-pas. Another main dining etiquette rule is to never talk with food in your mouth, even if someone asked you a question.
