The Brisbane-bound Flight QF520, carrying 174 passengers, encountered trouble shortly after takeoff around 1 pm when passengers heard what they described as a loud bang. Passenger Georgina Lewis told 9News that “one of the engines appeared to have gone.”
In an interesting twist, while passengers reported an explosion, Qantas has disputed this characterization. “Qantas engineers have conducted a preliminary inspection of the engine and confirmed it was a contained engine failure,” a Qantas spokesperson stated, emphasizing that “there was no explosion.”
Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano highlighted the crew’s preparedness: “After circling for a short period, the aircraft landed safely at Sydney Airport.” He acknowledged the “distressing experience” for passengers and promised support would be provided.

Adding to the drama, Fire and Rescue NSW reported a substantial grassfire adjacent to the runway. Superintendent Adam Dewberry described the blaze as “pretty large,” with multiple fire trucks deployed to the scene.

A spokesperson stated: “This departure of aircraft coincided with a grass fire along the eastern side of the airport’s parallel runway, which was brought under control by teams from the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service.”
“It’s not clear at this stage if the two incidents are linked and investigations are continuing,” the airport spokesperson added. The airport has announced plans for a priority inspection of the parallel runway to restore full service as quickly as possible.
