Vladimir Putin appears frail during meeting with Belarus' Lukashenko: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared notably frail and off-color during his recent meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk, sparking concerns about his health. The meeting, held on Friday, focused on the latest developments in the Ukraine war and other critical issues.

Health concerns highlighted

A report by the Daily Mail highlighted Putin’s apparent frailty during the conference. Observers noted that Putin seemed tired and rundown, particularly during a press briefing on Russian military gains in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Throughout the meeting, he was seen gripping a table for support, tapping his feet, and appearing unsteady while walking.

Putin’s physical appearance has fueled speculation

Putin’s physical appearance has fueled speculation, especially after he canceled several significant engagements. In December 2023, he canceled a trip to Pskov at the last minute, citing unfavorable flying conditions despite clear weather forecasts. He also skipped a visit to Russia’s largest tank plant in Nizhny Tagil and did not attend the annual end-of-year meeting of his ministers, his traditional December press conference, or his end-of-year ice hockey game.

During the Minsk press conference, Putin reiterated Russia’s willingness to engage in talks about the Ukraine war. However, he questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine. “Of course, we are aware that the legitimacy of the current head of state has ended,” Putin stated. “We must be completely sure that we are dealing with legitimate authorities.”

Strengthening ties with Belarus

The two-day visit to Belarus was part of a series of foreign tours marking the start of Putin’s fifth term in office. Since his May 7 inauguration, he has also visited China and is scheduled to visit Uzbekistan next. Russia and Belarus continue to strengthen their relations, with both nations moving towards forming a “union state.”

Putin’s health and his ability to lead are under increasing scrutiny as he navigates both domestic and international challenges.
