Guinness World Record broken as 1,415 students play red light/green light game from the Squid Game

The University of California Irvine hosted the largest game of Red light/Greenlight, in which 1,415 students competed. The event from Orange County, California created Guinness World Record.

Outside of North America and the United Kingdom, the well-known children’s game is most frequently known as Statues and is played in many forms.

However, Red Light/Green Light’s recent comeback can be attributed to the South Korean survival drama Squid Game. Its popularity is shown by the fact that UCI chose to host a game as part of its Welcome Week tradition of trying to break a Guinness World Record.

The game smashed the previous record of 1,203 set by Oregon’s Willamette University in 2015, according to an official adjudicator.

Students claimed that the institution was open to something unusual and enjoyable because they had completed their first year totally online.

Fourth-year philosophy student Sarah Semaan told the LA Times, “I know it’s a little cringy, and UCI isn’t particularly known for its school spirit, but I think this year is really different,”

“I see a lot of people this year who are really willing to just let go of that conception of ‘Oh, I’m too cool for this and just really have fun and play the game.”

According to UPI, the university has previously been successful in setting Guinness World Records for events with a comparable level of public involvement, such as the largest games of balloon tag (2017), dodgeball (2012), water pistol fight (2013), and capture the flag (2014) and (2015).
