Interesting facts about King Charles III, the new Monarch of the UK

The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey in London, continuing a more than a thousand-year-old tradition. When his mother passed away at the age of 73, he was crowned king. Charles was just 4 years old when his mother was crowned as Queen Elizabeth II. According to a Reuters story, he is the first monarch to have attended school because all of his predecessors received their education from private tutors. He attended Hill House School in West London before boarding at Cheam School in Berkshire, where he later served as head boy. His late father, Prince Philip, was also a student there.

Following that, he was transferred to Gordonstoun, a challenging boarding school in Scotland which Philip had also attended. He attended Geelong Church of England Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia, for two terms as part of his education. He enrolled in Trinity College in Cambridge to study physical and social anthropology and archaeology before switching to history. Additionally, he studied Welsh for a term at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Until his eventual retirement from the sport in 2005 at the age of 57, he played polo avidly for more than 40 years, according to Reuters. He continued to play competitively until 1993. In one incident, he fell and suffered a double fracture to his right arm, necessitating surgery, and a bone transplant. He also ended up in the hospital in 2001 after another fall. He also competed in six races as an amateur jockey in 1980–81, finishing second twice while also being unseated twice.

After succeeding his mother Queen Elizabeth, the monarch has frequently quoted Shakespeare and has a strong enthusiasm for the arts. Not only that, but he also picked up the piano, trumpet, and cello at school. He also took part in a number of theatrical productions, playing the lead in one of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” plays. According to the Royal Family website, he enjoys opera and classical music, but also names Leonard Cohen as a favorite artist.
