A Texas mother has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted of poisoning her four-year-old daughter in a disturbing attempt to fabricate a seizure disorder. Jesika Jones received the sentence last week for charges of injury to a child and endangering a child, according to Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney Phil Sorrells.
A case of calculated child abuse
The harrowing case began to unfold in June 2022 when Jones took her daughter to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, claiming the child had been suffering from chronic seizures. This marked the fourth time Jones had brought her daughter to the emergency room with similar claims, according to reports from Law and Crime.
During a previous visit, hospital staff had tested the girl’s urine and found elevated levels of Benadryl, an allergy medication intended for children aged six and older. However, the child was discharged before the urinalysis results were available.
In the critical June 2022 visit, spanning from June 19 to June 23, Jones was observed taking her daughter to the bathroom multiple times each day, always carrying a small purse. She later admitted to authorities that the purse contained Benadryl, which she administered to her daughter, triggering seizures.
Medical experts and law enforcement intervene
Medical professionals determined that the girl’s symptoms were consistent with Benadryl poisoning. Despite the child’s daily positive tests for the substance, Jones denied giving her daughter any medication while at the hospital. This raised suspicions among doctors, who then alerted the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, prompting an investigation.
During questioning, Jones eventually confessed to administering four or five 25 mg adult Benadryl tablets to her daughter on multiple occasions. She was subsequently charged with causing serious bodily or mental injury to a child and reckless criminal negligence resulting in child endangerment.
A chilling confession and sentencing
The investigation revealed that Jones had two 24-pill packets of Benadryl in her purse, with only six pills remaining. Texas authorities also found an empty 30-pill bottle of Trazodone, an antidepressant, and a bottle of Hydroxyzine, an antihistamine missing 64 pills. Jones admitted to giving her daughter one of each on at least two separate occasions.
In her confession, Jones expressed deep self-loathing, telling police, “I’m a horrible person. I don’t love myself. I don’t like who I am. I’m tired of living life like this. I’m tired of hurting people. I don’t know. I really don’t.” She also described herself as a “habitual liar” and acknowledged her need for help, saying, “I need help.”
Last Friday, 485th District Court Judge Steve Jumes handed down the 60-year sentence, calling Jones a “determined recidivist.” The judge noted that as recently as a month ago, Jones had continued the behavior that led to her guilty plea in January. “Because you are a determined recidivist and because I believe that you have a knack for finding situations where you can have access to children, I’m not confident giving you a prison sentence simply to [go] beyond a traditional dating range will protect the public,” Judge Jumes declared. “It is the court sentence that you will receive 60 years in prison.”
