Medford, Ore. — A Legal Storm Brews
In a shocking development, attorneys representing both living and deceased patients have filed a staggering $303 million lawsuit against Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, Oregon. The lawsuit comes in the wake of allegations that a nurse at the hospital replaced prescribed fentanyl with nonsterile tap water in intravenous drips.
Accusations of negligence
The wrongful death and medical malpractice complaint accuses the hospital of gross negligence. The suit claims that Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center failed to adequately monitor medication administration procedures and prevent drug diversion by their employees, among other serious lapses.
A spokesperson for the hospital declined to comment on the ongoing legal matters.
The arrest of Dani Marie Schofield
The controversy began when Dani Marie Schofield, a former nurse at the hospital, was arrested in June. She faces 44 counts of second-degree assault, stemming from a police investigation into the theft and misuse of controlled substances that led to patient infections. Schofield has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Interestingly, Schofield is not named or listed as a defendant in the new complaint filed on Tuesday. However, a separate suit had been filed against both Schofield and the hospital earlier this year on behalf of the estate of a 65-year-old man who died.
The plaintiffs and their claims
The new lawsuit involves 18 plaintiffs, comprising nine patients and the estates of nine deceased patients. According to the suit, the hospital began informing affected individuals in December that an employee had replaced fentanyl with tap water, leading to bacterial infections.
The legal battle is set to be a significant test for Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, as it grapples with these grave allegations amidst growing public scrutiny.
