Florida bank robber fills out withdrawal slip for $00.01

In a peculiar incident that unfolded last Saturday, June 29, Florida authorities were summoned to a Chase Bank branch in response to an “in-progress bank robbery.”

A penny for your thoughts

Michael Fleming, the suspect, reportedly entered the bank, filled out a withdrawal slip for the amount of $00.01, and handed it to the teller. The arrest report noted, “The defendant was told he could not be given $00.01, at which time he advised, ‘So you want me to say the other word?'” Fearing potential violence, the teller immediately alerted law enforcement. Deputies arrived swiftly and apprehended Fleming while he was still inside the bank.

Previous attempts and motivations

Further investigations revealed that Chase was not Fleming’s initial target. According to his arrest report, he had attempted to rob another bank earlier that day but found it closed. He then drove to a nearby Chase Bank.

During a recorded interview at the sheriff’s office, Fleming provided a candid account of his actions and intentions. He explained, “Most of the time, the way tellers are trained if someone comes in to rob you, you give them the money and let them go.” He expected the teller to hand over the penny, after which he planned to wait for the police. “The defendant advised his goal was to be arrested.”

No financial gain

Fleming did not obtain any money during the robbery. It was noted that he does not have an account with Chase Bank. Instead, Fleming now finds himself with an account at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office detention facility, subject to a $20.00 subsistence fee like every other inmate. The 41-year-old is facing a felony charge of robbery with no firearm or weapon. This bizarre attempt at a heist has left many questioning the motivations behind such an unconventional crime.

This incident has drawn significant attention, with many speculating on Fleming’s mental state and his commentary on the American financial system. Law enforcement and legal experts will continue to investigate and determine the appropriate course of action for this unusual case.
