Amazon executive faces backlash for wearing controversial necklace in company video

Backlash sparks over a necklace worn by Amazon executive

An Amazon executive is facing significant backlash after she was seen wearing a pendant featuring the Palestinian flag in what appears to be an outline of Israel during a company video. The executive, Ruba Borno, serves as the Vice President of Global Specialists and Partner Organizations for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and wore the necklace in a promotional video for an upcoming conference in Las Vegas.

The timing of the video has heightened controversy, as tensions in the Middle East have surged following recent violent escalations. The symbolism of the necklace has upset many, with some interpreting it as a political statement during a particularly sensitive period.

Hostage crisis adds to Amazon’s complex position

This controversy unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing hostage situation involving Sasha Troufanov, an Amazon employee, who has been held captive by Hamas for nearly a year. Troufanov, an Israeli hardware engineer, was abducted along with three family members, and his father was tragically killed in the attack. The hostage crisis has deeply affected Amazon’s internal discussions and responses.

Mixed reactions to Borno’s necklace

The necklace Borno wore has divided public opinion online. Some social media users condemned the choice, with one calling for her immediate termination, and others declaring that they would cancel their Amazon subscriptions in protest. One user labeled the gesture “vile” and “unacceptable.”

However, other social media users expressed indifference, with some arguing that the reaction was overblown. “To be honest, this doesn’t seem worth getting mad about,” one commenter remarked.

Amazon responds by removing the video

In light of the backlash, Amazon has taken swift action, removing the controversial video. Borno herself has deleted her account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). An Amazon spokesperson clarified to DailyMail.com: “The video shot was not meant to be a political statement, but we’ve taken down the video and will repost a new one in the coming days.”

Borno’s background and the ongoing Middle East conflict

Ruba Borno was born in Palestine and fled Kuwait with her parents during the first Gulf War in 1990. Her family later settled in the United States, where she pursued a career in electrical engineering. Borno has been with AWS since November 2021.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding Middle East issues, particularly following the October 7th Hamas attacks that claimed 1,200 lives in Israel. Since then, the conflict in Gaza has escalated, with the death toll now surpassing 42,979.

As the controversy continues to unfold, this incident highlights the challenges corporations face when personal expression intersects with global political tensions. Amazon’s swift removal of the video suggests an effort to neutralize the backlash while maintaining a delicate balance in a charged political climate.
