Mass Primate Escape Sends South Carolina Town into Lock-Down Mod

In an unprecedented incident that has captured national attention, a small South Carolina town finds itself grappling with an unusual crisis as 43 young primates remain at large following their escape from a research facility. Local authorities have urged residents to secure their homes while an extensive search continues.

Security breach traced to human error

According to Town Administrator Matthew Garnes, the mass escape occurred when a new employee at the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee inadvertently left an enclosure door open around 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday. “At this point, none have been captured,” the Yemassee Police Department confirmed in a statement posted on their Facebook page.

Residents report close encounters

Local resident Mia Mitchell described a surreal encounter with one of the escaped primates. “I thought my eyes were deceiving me and I was like, ‘That couldn’t be a monkey,'” Mitchell said. She detailed how the primate darted across the road and climbed up a tree while she and her daughter watched in astonishment.

Health and safety assurances

The escapees are all young female Rhesus Macaque monkeys, each weighing approximately 6 to 7 pounds. Police have moved to reassure the public about potential health risks, stating, “The animals have never been used for testing due to their young age and size.” A facility spokesperson confirmed that the primates are too young to carry diseases.

High-Tech search efforts

Law enforcement officials have deployed thermal imaging cameras in their search efforts, while traps are being set around the facility. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has advised residents to:

  • Keep doors and windows secured
  • Avoid approaching the animals
  • Contact 911 immediately if spotted

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) has announced her involvement in the situation, stating, “We’re diligently gathering all relevant information to keep our constituents informed regarding the recent escape of primates from Alpha Genesis Inc. in Beaufort County.” Her office is maintaining direct communication with local law enforcement to monitor developments.

About Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center

Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center, according to its website, “provides the highest quality nonhuman primate products and bio-research services worldwide,” including various biological samples for research purposes. The facility has yet to provide official comment on the incident.

Local officials believe the primates haven’t strayed far from the research center, though the search continues. Authorities emphasize that the monkeys’ skittish nature could complicate capture efforts, and any additional noise or movement might hinder their safe return.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
