Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States, will have surgery to remove a “small tumor” over her right eye the next week, her office announced on Wednesday. According to the White House, the lesion was found during a routine skin cancer examination. According to a note from White House physician Kevin O’Connor, the first lady will have the lesion removed on January 11 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland during a “routine outpatient operation.”

A White House official who spoke to the Associated Press under anonymity because they were discussing personal medical information said that Jill Biden’s cancer screening took place in the latter part of last year. The White House withheld any additional information regarding the process. She underwent what the White House described as a routine medical procedure in April 2021. According to the AP, the president followed his wife to an outpatient facility close to the campus of George Washington University. After roughly two hours, the couple returned to the White House. This week, Joe and Jill Biden returned to the White House from a holiday getaway in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands.
