"Hospice Care": Biden’s absence fuels conspiracy theories

Following Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, social media has been rife with speculative theories about his health. Amidst viral rumors, including claims of him being in hospice care, the White House clarified that Biden is isolating after testing positive for COVID.

Theories and accusations

The hashtag “Where’s Joe?” trended globally on X (formerly Twitter), with users questioning the president’s whereabouts after five days without a public appearance. Social media buzzed with speculation, some alleging Biden was in hospice care and unlikely to survive.

Several individuals have noted that the live webcam at the U.S. Capitol shows flags at half-mast, leading to claims that an announcement of President Biden’s death is imminent. However, as the camera pans around, it reveals other flags flying at full mast.

The flags at half-mast over the U.S. Capitol were lowered at Congress’s request to honor Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on July 19. The flags may remain in that position until her funeral.

Republican nominee Donald Trump and VP pick JD Vance suggested a “coup” within the Democratic Party, insinuating Biden’s removal from the race was orchestrated. Trump remarked, “Sort of,” when asked if Biden’s exit was a coup, with Vance adding, “If Joe Biden can’t run for president, he can’t serve as president.”

Pressure and transition

Biden’s decision followed mounting internal pressure from Democrats after his lackluster debate performance against Trump on June 27. Vice President Kamala Harris secured support from Democratic lawmakers to replace him in the election.

In his resignation address, Biden, still recovering from Covid, urged Democrats to unite behind Harris. “She’s the best,” he said, emphasizing the need for party cohesion.

Harris’s challenge

With less than four months until the election, Harris faces the daunting task of winning public trust. While Trump leads in some polls against Biden, it remains uncertain whether he will retain this edge against Harris.
