German city temporarily renames itself after Taylor Swift- Here's why

The German city formerly known as Gelsenkirchen has temporarily renamed itself “Swiftkirchen” to honor American superstar Taylor Swift, who is set to perform three concerts as part of her Eras Tour later this month.

A tribute to Taylor Swift

In a gesture to welcome the tens of thousands of fans expected for Swift’s shows on July 17, 18, and 19, the city unveiled a new name inspired by the singer. The announcement was made by the German news agency DPA.

A yellow city sign bearing the new name, which translates roughly to “Swift’s Church,” was unveiled by Swift fan Aleshanee Westhoff. Westhoff had suggested the name to the city’s mayor and started a petition a few weeks ago. Mayor Karin Welge expressed gratitude for the “great idea” in a letter accepting the proposal.

Swiftie signs and celebrations

The new city sign features a pink portrait of Taylor Swift and is prominently displayed in the city center. Additional signs will be placed at highly frequented locations throughout Gelsenkirchen in the coming days, according to city spokesman Markus Schwardtmann.

Gelsenkirchen, one of Germany’s poorer cities and a former coal mining town is known for its soccer team and a massive stadium that occasionally hosts international entertainers like Swift.

Gelsenkirchen’s Walk of Fame and other festivities

Taylor Swift will also receive her own stone on the Gelsenkirchen Walk of Fame, joining local notables such as soccer coach Rudi Assauer and writer Ilse Kibgis. During her concerts, the city will host open-air parties with karaoke performances. Additionally, a “Taylor Swift streetcar” is already in operation, DPA reported.

Further fan attractions are being planned but remain under wraps for now. “There will be lots of big and small surprises so that the Swifties have plenty to discover in Gelsenkirchen,” Schwardtmann said.

Sold-out shows and future performances

Swift’s concerts in Gelsenkirchen, which will take place at the Veltins-Arena on Schalke stadium, are sold out and expected to draw up to 70,000 fans. The Eras Tour will also include shows in Hamburg and Munich.
