Chicago, IL – Justice Zimmerman, a 30-year-old escapee who fled from a Mississippi courthouse over two months ago, is currently barricaded in a Chicago restaurant just a few blocks away from the Democratic National Convention (DNC) venue.
Details of the standoff
Zimmerman, who is wanted for murder and armed robbery, has been on the run since June 14, when he escaped from the DeSoto County Circuit Court Building in Hernando, Mississippi. On Tuesday evening, he found himself in a standoff with police at a restaurant located in Chicago’s Near West Side.
Justice Smith, Chief Deputy at the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi, provided an update during a press conference. “The 30-year-old escapee remains alone in the restaurant and is in a standoff with the Chicago SWAT team,” Smith said, noting that there are no innocent civilians at risk.
Wanted and dangerous
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Zimmerman is not only wanted for murder and armed robbery but now also faces charges for his escape. The authorities have been tirelessly searching for him since his daring courthouse getaway.
Zimmerman is described as a Black or African American male, standing at 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 210 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, and tattoos on his neck and arms. He is believed to have shaved his beard since his escape. Zimmerman is considered “armed and dangerous,” according to the U.S. Marshals Service, which is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to his capture.

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office is working diligently to detain Zimmerman and extradite him back to Mississippi. “We hope to interview him and gather the remaining facts about his escape,” Smith informed reporters.
