D’wayne Antonio Morris: Minnesota businessman killed in Brazil in 'Goodnight Cinderella’ plot, woman arrested

Brazilian woman arrested in connection with Minnesota businessman’s death in Rio de Janeiro

A 23-year-old Brazilian woman, Letícia Clara Bento da Silva, has been arrested in connection with the death of D’wayne Antonio Morris, a Minnesota businessman, in an alleged drug-fueled robbery in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month. Brazil’s Civil Police have identified da Silva as the prime suspect in what they are calling a “Goodnight Cinderella” plot.

The incident

On August 8, Morris, 43, was found dead in his rented apartment in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, just one day after arriving in Brazil. According to reports from the local news outlet g1, it is believed that Morris was drugged, leading to severe convulsions and foaming at the mouth.

Da Silva, along with an unidentified accomplice, is accused of drugging Morris with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a powerful depressant, before robbing him and fleeing the scene.

In Brazil, such drug-induced robberies are commonly referred to as “Goodnight Cinderella” schemes, where victims are incapacitated by substances like GHB or Rohypnol. If administered in large doses, GHB can cause loss of consciousness, respiratory depression, and even death.

The timeline

Morris and a friend reportedly met da Silva and her accomplice while out in the Lapa neighborhood. After having drinks at a bar, the group planned to return to Morris’ apartment. While Morris’ friend, feeling dizzy, decided to go elsewhere, Morris and the two women went to his apartment after midnight.

Surveillance footage captured the two women leaving Morris’ building two hours later and getting into a black car. Authorities believe da Silva may be involved in several other drug-induced thefts. She now faces charges of murder in connection with Morris’ death.

Official response

The U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro expressed condolences to Morris’ family, stating, “We offer our sincerest condolences to the family for their loss and stand ready to provide consular assistance. We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigations regarding the cause of death. Out of respect for the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”

Who was D’wayne Antonio Morris?

D’wayne Antonio Morris was the president and founder of Blue Waters Consulting and Soul Community Development Corporation, managing a $14 million business portfolio. Described as a “fun partner” by his business partner, Tamatha Richman, Morris was the sole provider for his blended family, which includes three children.

In the wake of his death, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to help cover the costs of repatriating Morris’ body, funeral arrangements, and supporting his family. The campaign described Morris as “a kind, adventurous spirit who brought joy to everyone around him.”

As investigations continue, Morris’ death serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of traveling and the risks associated with such criminal schemes in foreign countries.
