In an unexpected turn of events, tennis sensation Lyudmyla Kichenok postponed her wedding to compete in the U.S. Open, an act of dedication that did not go unnoticed. Unyielding dominance

The duo’s impeccable performance culminated on Friday as they dominated their opponents, Zhang Shuai and Kristina Mladenovic. This win was particularly gratifying for Kichenok, who had faced disappointment the previous week after losing in the mixed doubles finals alongside Sadio Doumbia.

A Surprise revelation

During her acceptance speech at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Kichenok made a startling revelation that captivated the audience. The 32-year-old athlete disclosed that she had postponed her wedding earlier in the week to participate in the tournament.

Expressing her gratitude, Kichenok mentioned: “Also my boyfriend, could be husband, actually. Because we were supposed to get married this Wednesday but it didn’t happen!”

Mary Joe Fernandez, intrigued by Kichenok’s comment, sought clarification. Kichenok explained, “We had actually an appointment to get married this Wednesday but just because I was playing semi-finals.”

A gesture of sportsmanship

Kichenok’s dedication garnered widespread admiration within the sports community, with fellow competitor Jessica Pegula making a touching gesture. Pegula, known for her sportsmanship and hailing from a family with a reported net worth of over $5 billion, sent Kichenok a thoughtful gift.

Kichenok shared the generous present on Instagram with her 31.5k followers, revealing a bottle of champagne accompanied by a note: “I saw you were meant to get married on Wednesday! Congrats on a great tournament and enjoy your wedding!”

Pegula’s Grand Slam dream

Pegula competed in her first Grand Slam singles final against Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday (September 7, 2024). Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka defeated American sixth seed Jessica Pegula 7-5 7-5 in the U.S. Open women’s final.

Reflecting on her journey before the finals, Pegula said, “It’s a childhood dream. It’s what I wanted when I was a kid. It’s a lot of work, a lot of hard work put in. You couldn’t even imagine how much goes into it… I’m just happy to be in a final, but obviously, I come here to want to win the title.”

Continuing, she expressed her excitement and determination: “So to be able to overcome all those challenges and say that I get a chance at the title Saturday is what we play for as players, let alone being able to do that in my home country here, in my home slam. It’s perfect, really.”

Lyudmyla Kichenok’s story of sacrifice and triumph serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication to the sport. Simultaneously, Jessica Pegula’s thoughtfulness and sportsmanship highlight the camaraderie within the tennis community. As both players continue to chase their dreams, their stories inspire countless fans around the world.
